Kitchen reno Update

Not much going on right now with the reno...just waiting for the Franke sink to come in from Germany. The island box was recently installed.
Starting to really really miss baking...and we're eating takeout quite a bit! (though eating out is not really a big issue from the norm). I know this is the lull before the storm!

CAKEBRAIN’S KITCHEN RENO: DAY 4

DSC_2463

Here’s how my kitchen tiles will be laid out.

DSC_2464

It’s evening as I take this pic and difficult to see the colour of the tile.  It’s essentially white with some grey streaking.  The pattern is pretty subtle.

Patrik, the tiler will be in tomorrow morning to finish up the floor and I’ll take a pic after he’s done!

SUIKA, JAPANESE IZAKAYA RESTAURANT

IMG_2452

Deluxe Suika Box:  Suika’s Appetizer sampler box.

Yes, it was very good…and appetizing!  I had  to order the sampler because I love variety!  The portion sizes were not too bad...served in little sake cups in a lacquer box. It was a gorgeous presentation.

IMG_2453

Negitoro sashimi appetizer.  Lots of fresh tuna in a delicious sauce; topped with scallions.

IMG_2454

Chicken karaage.  Crispy nicely fried moist boneless chicken.

IMG_2455

Corn Kakiage:  like a corn tempura.  My favourite dish of the night! Fresh niblets lightly battered and nicely seasoned...they were so addictive!

IMG_2456

Beef Filet fried rice with garlic.  Crispy fried garlic slices and tenderloin beef chunks! yum!

IMG_2457

Oxtail ramen:  my girl loves ramen.  The broth is super rich.  Definitely nice beefy flavour with chunks of meat throughout.

IMG_2458

Matcha Creme Brulee.  This is not like a real creme brulee in that it is frozen.  It’s like matcha ice cream in texture but cut into it with a spoon...and it's hard because it's frozen!   It tastes like matcha creme brulee.  Neat! The crunchy brulee is caramelized sugar and there’s a dusting of matcha on the plate.

IMG_2459

Pumpkin creme brulee…a seasonal dessert in a tiny single-serving size.

IMG_2460

Creamy, pumpkin-y, yummy!

IMG_2466

We each had a complimentary frozen grape at the end.  The girls scarfed their two grapes down before I could get a shot of all the grapes.  Something so simple can be so refreshing!

IMG_2461

The bottle chandelier.  Cool!

Service was attentive and the atmosphere really neat.  The colours were dark and decor was modern and funky.  I loved the attention to presentation of the food. I also enjoyed trying all the different menu items and look forward to coming back to try other dishes...like the Chinese poutine.  I wasn't in the mood for fusion tonight; maybe next time!

Suika is located on W. Broadway.  There is plenty of metered parking out front.

Yah.   This is how you eat breakfast when you don’t have a kitchen.

DAY 3 KITCHEN RENO PICS:

DSC_2457

Philippe took out the remaining floor tiles and worked on the walls today…

DSC_2458

We have radiant heating under the floor.

DSC_2459

The colour of the walls will be gray:  either BM Fieldstone Gray or MS Bedford Gray. Whatcha think?  I’m thinking Benjamin Moore for the quality of the paint.

DSC_2461

Here’s a shot of the mantle above my fireplace.  Like I said: Every square inch of horizontal space is covered in kitchen innards!

CAKEBRAIN’S KITCHEN RENO: DAY 2

DSC_2437

A view from my dining area into the kitchen.

Note the refrigerator has been dragged into the room.  This is a good thing.  Otherwise we wouldn’t be able to eat much!   In the foreground to the right are the appliances that we’re saving to install in the new kitchen.

DSC_2438

Almost all the granite tiles have been removed.

DSC_2439

The area around the sink (under the window) was mouldy from the leaking faucet and so the drywall is going to be replaced.

DSC_2440

The cupboards and kitchen parts are all sitting outside waiting to be picked up and carted off.

DSC_2441

DSC_2442

Here’s the sink from hell sitting on my deck.  It’s cast iron and bloody heavy.  The faucet is useless…it was leaking for the last half year and would have cost us a bundle to fix and/ or replace anyway.  I am so glad to get rid of this behemoth.  I don’t recommend the 3 bowl sinks with the  tiny useless triangular bowl in the middle.  Whoever thought up this idea doesn’t cook much.  Because the faucet is centred in the middle above the shallow tiny middle bowl (where the garburator is located), often the faucet doesn’t reach far enough to the bigger bowls.  If you have a pull-out head, you have to drag out the faucet head every time you want to wash something in the bigger bowls and as a result there’s wear and tear on the hose.  We’ve had to replace a leaking hose a few times already.  I believe this is the third faucet for the lifespan of this particular sink.

CAKEBRAIN’S KITCHEN RENO: BRAINS AND BRAWN

DSC_2433

Employing Brains and Brawn:  Will McPhail (right) and Philippe (left)
from McPhail Renovations, Vancouver, B.C.

BEFORE THE RENO PICS:
Just so you know, I had crackers for dinner.   My kids subsisted on Halloween Candies, instant noodles and bread.

Nov. 1, 2011…the night before the demolition begins, I have packed away the tons of dishes, food, pans and detritus from my kitchen.  Every square inch of horizontal space in my home has kitchen stuff on it.  I even managed to squirrel away all my fine crystal wine glasses high up over my fireplace.

These pictures were taken the night before the demo:
IMG_2601

This is my kitchen.  Yah. Very grey.  When we bought our home over 8 years ago, I knew that the granite looked expensive.  Someone paid a pretty penny for it.  But gads, when you spill something, you can’t see it!   I came to curse it as the years passed.

IMG_2605

That’s the Sub-Zero fridge on the left that’s broken down several times since we’ve moved in.  We’ve had it patched up but it’s on its last legs.  I thought they were supposed to last forever.  Guess not.

IMG_2604

I love my window area but hate the 3-bowl cast iron sink.  The garburetor is in the centre.  The faucet doesn’t reach the other bowls adequately and when I wash stuff, inevitably the front of my shirt is drenched because the water splashes up the shallow middle sink.  Not so practical for big pots and pans either.

IMG_2603

That’s a Miele dishwasher.  This is relatively new as my old dishwasher broke down the second year we moved in.  The hood fan broke down last year.  So the Vent-A-Hood you see is practically brand new.  Keeping all that new stuff of course.

IMG_2602

That horrid range is going and I’ve ordered a Wolf.   Red knobs!

IMG_2607

The first year we moved in, the microwave broke down and then the oven was too small to roast even a chicken (it was a Jenn Air).  I purchased a Wolf Convection Oven (on the bottom) and the Convection Microwave (top) to replace them.  These are keepers of course.

IMG_2606

This is the counter where I usually do all my baking and prep work.  It’s not huge but it’ll do.  I will be replacing the island granite with White Marble.

CAKEBRAIN’S KITCHEN RENO: DAY 1...DECONSTRUCTION
DSC_2428

I’ve known Will for a long time.   He’s a good friend.  When he decided to start his own renovation company, McPhail Renovations,  I was very happy for him and I kept him in the back of my mind because I knew his attention to detail and even-keeled personality would appease my OCD tendencies if I should need to renovate.

DSC_2430

Will is not your typical contractor.    I’m not saying other contractors aren’t intelligent, as I’ve only dealt with a handful, but Will is definitely cerebral.    This came in quite handy on Day 1 of the Demo when he and his assistant Philippe had to remove the Vent-A-Hood.  They were cursing the guy who designed it (and me for choosing it)!   Not only was the Vent-A-Hood built like a jet engine, it weighed like one.   That, and it didn't help matters that I hadn’t cleaned the icky tacky film on the hood in a couple of weeks or clean the nasty buildup in the trap prior to them removing it!   My bad!

Island’s dismantled, top cupboards are down and appliances are out!  The appliances are resting on my dining room floor.  The refrigerator’s still in there currently.
